Situated between Brading and Sandown, The Yarbridge Inn is very much a family affair. Chef Mamma Fox and her son Richard lead the cheffing team, while daughter Becky heads the friendly waiting team. The family took over the pub and restaurant 15 years ago and over the years it has gained a reputation for serving traditional and hearty food, using locally sourced ingredients where possible.
What is it about the Island that appeals to you as a place to live and work?
Although I’m not an Islander, we moved here when I was 6, so I’ve been here most of my life, growing up in the hospitality industry. It’s the perfect place to live and work because life is slower; we all seem to run at a gentler pace here. I wake up every morning and can smell the wonderful sea air.
Where is your favourite place on the Island?
Sage Coffee House, St Helens, for a Biscoff matcha and a home-made cookie… It’s my weekend treat!
Where is your favourite beach on the Island?
My favourite beach is Yaverland; it’s right on my doorstep and the views of Culver Cliff are stunning.
Where is your favourite place on the Island to go for a walk?
When the tide is low, I love the walk from Bembridge Lifeboat Station round to Bembridge Point. It’s a lovely walk and in the summer you can get a drink and an ice cream at the Point.
What is your favourite Island event?
My fave event is Walk the Wight in aid of the Mountbatten Hospice. My 8-year-old and his friend walked the full 26.5 miles with us this year. Such a vital charity for our Island.
If readers only had an hour on the Island, what would you recommend they do or where would you recommend they visit?
If it was a beautiful day here, I’d recommend going straight to Blackgang viewpoint car park. Take the short walk to the viewpoint and just sit and take in the breathtaking view of our west coast. There is no better place to be.
